20 Years and Still Pulling: Real Stories / Customer Spotlight

Some products survive a season. Some survive a decade. And then there's Charles Mongold's Gear Keeper.

Charles recently walked into Mats -- his local outdoor retailer -- to pick up a new Gear Keeper Mini. When he mentioned to the guy behind the counter that he'd owned his original for somewhere between 15 and 20 years (maybe more -- he genuinely can't remember when he bought it), the employee stopped him right there. He asked Charles to send some photos. We're glad he did.

Gear Keeper Mini retractor after 20 years of use

Looking at these images, you can see exactly what two decades of real-world use looks like on a Gear Keeper. The braided cord is worn, frayed at the loop end, and showing every adventure it's been part of. The retractor housing, on the other hand, still carries the original Gear Keeper by Hammerhead stamp on the back -- Made in U.S.A., Patent 5,697,572 -- clear as the day it was manufactured.

The snap hook still swivels. The housing is intact. The retractor mechanism kept on doing its job until Charles decided -- on his own terms -- that it was time for a fresh cord.

That's not a product failure story. That's a product success story.

"I love your product. The only reason I purchased the new one is because the cord is really showing some wear and tear." -- Charles Mongold

Gear Keeper has always been built to a standard that outlasts trends, seasons, and most of the gear it's attached to. Charles's retractor is a perfect example of what that means in the field -- not a showroom product, but a working tool that earned its retirement on its own terms.

Thanks for sharing the photos, Charles. Welcome to the next 20 years.
